The rumour mill is abound with articles about the new iPhone having wireless charging which seemed to originate with a lot of other rumours on last weeks TWIT podcast and Robert Scoble. Scoble mentioned new apple AR glasses (weighing under 3 grams), a new apple TV and 3 new apples iPhones one of which will be transparent (and all 3 with wireless charging and OLED panels).
Since this announcement the media seems to have jumped on a few of these premonitions especially the wireless charging and OLED display. Samsung introduced wireless charging in 2015 so there is a fair assumption Apple will introduce it as the newest thing which will realistically be similar to other companies wireless charging but slightly improved and given a voiceover by Jony Ive. The difference here is the rumours about long range charging which would allow you to charge your phone within several feet of a charging station. Engadget aren’t convinced it will happen as you can see below but fingers crossed.
For over a year, there’s been talk of Apple exploring long-range charging, possibly through a partnership with Energous. You’d just have to keep your iPhone within several feet of a charging station to top it up. The Wireless Power Consortium move doesn’t mean that Apple has given up on long-distance electricity, but it does suggest that the company believes conventional inductive charging is more practical in the near term. Also, it shows a firmer commitment to the very concept of wireless charging — Apple doesn’t think it starts and ends with one wearable product.
Lets hope all of Scobles predictions are true, cause lets face it, that would be awesome.
